Busoga University was founded by Busoga Diocese in 1998 with its headquarters in Iganga District. However, in 2017, the National Council for Higher Education revoked its license following allegations of having unqualified students and lecturers and running illegal study centres and unaccredited courses.
The president of the Republic of Uganda made an announcement about the government interests in taking over the University as a public institution.
The President was also concerned of the unpaid University loan that amounts to UGX 15 billion and said that it will only be paid by the government after learning of what it(loan) was used for.
President Museveni and the First Lady met the university officials at Nakasero State Lodge where both parties agreed on the terms for public benefit following various meetings with Busoga diocese that agreed to hand over the University and its assets to the government.
The President had sought assurances that the take over was on condition that the land was free in perpetuity and that the debts were legal.
